Futurama è una serie TV a cartoni animati creata da Matt Groening (autore anche de I Simpson) e David X. Cohen, prodotta inizialmente tra il 1999 e il 2003 per la Fox. Inizialmente cancellata dai palinsesti, venne ripresa da Comedy Central tra il 2008 e 2013 fino alla sua conclusione definitiva. In Italia è stata trasmessa su Italia 1 e Fox.
La serie è ambientata nella New York dell'anno 3000 e racconta le avventure di Philip J. Fry, fattorino di una pizzeria che il 1º gennaio dell'anno 2000 finisce accidentalmente in una capsula per il sonno criogenico e si risveglia mille anni dopo, il 31 dicembre 2999, iniziando una nuova vita nel futuro.
L'elemento fondamentale della serie, oltre ad una ben studiata sceneggiatura, è rappresentato dalle tantissime allusioni e parodie, in particolare dalla letteratura e cinematografia fantascientifica.
Molti spunti umoristici nascono da una visione assurda ed esasperata della tecnologia (che ad esempio ha creato le cabine automatizzate per il suicidio, o l'albero bonsai di macedonia) e di come gli uomini si trovino a convivere con robot e macchine che posseggono i loro stessi vizi e virtù.
In America, la serie è andata in onda in un primo momento tra il 1999 e il 2003 su FOX. Successivamente venne rilanciata nel 2007 attraverso quattro film per il mercato home video, che vennero poi proposti da Comedy Central come quinta stagione composta da 16 episodi nel 2008/2009. Successivamente venne ordinata una sesta stagione di 26 episodi (2010/2011) e una settima, sempre di 26 episodi (2012/2013). La serie non è stata rinnovata da Comedy Central per un'ottava stagione.[1] L'ultimo episodio, il centoquarantesimo, è stato trasmesso il 4 settembre 2013
